Eberhardsreuth Castle

As early as 1263, the Bishop of Passau, Otto von Lonsdorf, transferred Eberhartsdorf to Heinrich von Harchaim as a fief. In 1349, "Ewerhartstorf" is mentioned, in 1423 "Eberharzrewt", in 1436 "Eberhartzrewt", in 1488 "Eberhatzreit" and in 1500 "Eberezreith". The castle located here with its Hofmark was built in the 13th century and experienced numerous changes of ownership. Among others, the castle was owned by the Meilenhauser (1438), Thumayr (1488), Schilten (around 1500), Erasmus Walchsinger (1518), Duchy of Bavaria, Lords of Hauzenerg (1582), Wieninger, Lords of Stadlershausen (1702), Kajetan von Hueb and Baron von Pechmann. In 1582, Eberhardsreuth consisted of the castle, court tavern, brewery, official residence, and three subjects, each with a building fief.

In 1648, in the last year of the Thirty Years' War, the village was devastated by Swedish troops. In 1820, the Patrimonial Court of Eberhardsreuth Class II was formed, but abolished again in 1848. In 1854, Joseph Klämpfl counted 26 houses in "Eberhardsreut" in addition to the castle. In 1864, the Passau merchant Franz Xaver Rosenberger, known as a friend of Adalbert Stifter and owner of Stifter's summer residence Rosenbergergut, bought the castle from Karl Hueb. Even after that, the castle frequently changed owners. In 1883, the villagers founded the local volunteer fire brigade. St. Michael's Church, a filial church of the parish of Schönberg, was built in 1931. On May 1, 1978, the municipality of Eberhardsreuth became part of Schönberg as part of the territorial reform in Bavaria.

The castle, now partly hidden behind trees, dates back to a medieval moated castle. It consists of four two-story wings enclosing a small, rectangular courtyard. The castle chapel Maria Himmelfahrt dates from the 18th century. It was expanded in 1820 and consecrated on July 27, 1841, by the Bishop of Passau, Heinrich von Hofstätter. The castle serves as a residential building and is not accessible to the public.
