Ebenau Castle

Ebenau Castle

To be privately owned

Ebenau Castle is located on the southern outskirts of Weizelsdorf in the market town of Feistritz im Rosental in Carinthia.

The Ebenau estate initially belonged to the Hollenburg dominion. In 1200, it first came into the possession of Viktring Abbey. In 1530, the Dietrichstein zu Hollenburg family acquired the estate and built the Renaissance castle Ebenau in the late 16th century. As early as 1604, the castle passed into bourgeois ownership, and in 1670, it was bought back by Viktring Abbey. The Cistercians operated a dairy here, which was later leased out. The manor house served as a summer residence for the abbot in the 18th century. After the dissolution of the abbey, there were several changes of ownership. At the end of the 19th century, the Farlatti-Jesernigg family redesigned the building's interior and exterior in a late historicist style. In 1996, the Walker family bought the castle and adapted it for an art gallery.

Architectural Description+

The castle, a manor-like Renaissance building, is a two-story structure with an additional mezzanine floor and a rectangular, three-part floor plan under a hip roof. The two small corner turrets on the west facade were extended around 1900 with small quarter-circle bay windows. The Secessionist facade and the balcony above the west entrance also date from this period.

The vaulted rooms in the cellar and on the ground floor date from the 16th century. On the stately upper floor, a 16th-century wooden beam ceiling has been preserved, and in other rooms, remnants of 18th and 19th-century paintings.
