Drogosze Castle

Uninhabited

Drogosze Castle, also known as Dönhoffstädt, is an impressive historical structure in the Polish region of Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. It is characterized by its rich history and its once magnificent furnishings, making it a significant testament to regional aristocratic architecture.

History+

The origins of Drogosze Castle date back to the early 18th century. After a fire destroyed the older Renaissance castle of Groß Wolfsdorf, the new building was constructed between 1710 and 1716. The designs were created by architects Jean de Bodt and John von Collas. Until 1816, the estate was owned by the Dönhoff family. Following the death of Count Stanislaus Dönhoff, the castle passed to Angélique Dönhoff as part of an inheritance division; she later married Georg zu Dohna. In 1863, her niece Marianne Countess zu Stolberg-Wernigerode inherited the extensive estate. Her descendants inhabited the castle until their expropriation and expulsion in 1945. The castle once housed a theater in the west wing, a large library, and a house chapel in the east wing, which underwent a Neo-Gothic redesign in the 1830s. An expansive landscape park, laid out by Count Bogislav Dönhoff, stretched south of the castle and also included a fallow deer enclosure. After World War II, an agricultural school was established in the castle. Since the end of the People's Republic of Poland, the building has stood vacant.
