Dreißigacker Castle

In 1710, Duke Ernst Ludwig I of Meiningen had a hunting lodge built in Dreißigacker. From 1743 to 1785, it was owned by Duchess Luise Dorothea of Saxe-Gotha. In 1801, Johann Matthäus Bechstein founded an educational institution for forestry and hunting in the castle. Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen elevated the institution in 1803 to the first forestry academy in the territory of present-day Thuringia. In 1843, the academy was dissolved by Duke Bernhard II. From 1846, the castle served as a domicile for the Meiningen military, before being used as a prisoner-of-war camp for a short time from 1870. In 1920, Eduard Weitsch founded a residential folk high school in the castle. From 1946 to 1991, it was the seat of the Institute for Teacher Training Meiningen, which was housed in several buildings in Dreißigacker and Meiningen.

The castle, with its 1650 m² of usable space, was renovated and has served as a residential building with 16 housing units since 2002.
