Dreilützow Castle

One of the most significant Mecklenburg knight families, the "Lützowers", come from our small village of Dreilützow today. The beginnings of the village of Dreilützow date back to the Slavic period over 1000 years ago. The knight family of the "Lützowers" was first mentioned in a document in 1287.

At the beginning of the 18th century, the Count family of Bernstorff bought the lands in and around Dreilützow. Around 1720, the current castle with its associated side buildings and the gatehouse was built. At the same time, the Count family of Bernstorff had a baroque castle garden laid out. The transformation of this baroque garden into an English landscape park can be dated to around 1810. The entire estate was operated as a count's estate until the Great Depression in 1929. In 1945, the owners were forcibly expropriated and expelled by the communists.

After the Second World War, the St. Anna Parish from Schwerin acquired the castle with its park to open an orphanage here. This institution was run by the "Poor School Sisters" order. The orphanage had to be converted into a home for the disabled in 1969 under pressure from the then rulers in the GDR. The residential home for the disabled then located here was based in the castle for almost 30 years. In 1996, all residents of the home were able to move into newly built residential houses. The current residential home is located in the immediate vicinity directly on the castle park. From 1998, Caritas Mecklenburg e.V. opened Dreilützow Castle for many guest groups.

The rediscovered wall paintings are today the main witnesses to the long history of the manor house. In the so-called garden hall, paintings of baroque origin were discovered and restored. In the neighboring rooms, there are 200-year-old rare Pompeian paintings, as well as architectural paintings in the subsequent hall. You can learn more about the history on site. Visit us!
