Dorst Castle

Dorst Castle is located in the Dorst district of Calvörde. The listed building is located at Dorfstraße 8 and is in the center of the village.

The predecessor building was erected in 1863. The current building was built between 1922 and 1923 under the then estate owners Paul and Margarete Fischer. The building is of unusual dimensions and equally unusual architectural quality, making it unique in the Börde district. It is a two-story building with clinker architecture over a substructure floor, the north side as a show facade with round towers reminiscent of castle architecture, an access ramp and a grand staircase. The castle also has a high-quality grand staircase on the south-facing park side. In addition, the building is enhanced by figural decorations; on the eaves of the north side at the base of the Baroque mansard roof there are six sculptures of farmers at work, the lamps on the side of the northern grand staircase are decorated with animal sculptures, including a ram as a reference to Dorst's former function as a sheep pasture. The Gothic-style entrance hall inside has several stained-glass windows, especially in the hunting room of the eastern round tower, where several are clustered.

The park, which is rudimentary, is a testament to the architecture of the 1920s, in an idiosyncratic mixture of New Objectivity, Expressionism and Neo-Gothic.

Next to the building stands the old Dorst dovecote from the mid-19th century.
