Dornach Castle

Dornach Castle is a castle located directly on the Danube in the municipality of Saxen in the Perg district in the Lower Mühlviertel in Upper Austria.

Originally, a manor house stood on the site, first mentioned in a document in 1455, which belonged to Frida Strindberg-Uhl's grandfather, Cornelius Reischl, who sold it in 1890 to Maria Theresia Princess of Thurn und Taxis, who converted it into a castle. Further owners included the Bragança family, Baron Viktor von Offermann, Robert Koller, and the Taubländer family. In 2003, the Gschösser and Ebenbichler families (from Tyrol) acquired the castle and began extensive renovations.

The Neo-Baroque building is enriched with elements from various stylistic periods. The tower on the east corner is octagonal and crenellated. The terrace, extended between two parts of the building, is supported by a pillar arcade. On the upper floor, stucco ceilings from the Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque periods can be seen.

In 1893, the Swedish poet August Strindberg lived in the castle with his family.

In 2010, the castle became a venue for the Grenzfluss association, hosting events such as the Lower Austrian Artists' Days, a accompanying event to the Upper and Lower Austrian exhibition "Danube. Curse & Blessing", and the opening event of the Grenzfluss Worldjazz Festival with artistic director Peter Madsen.
