Dettensee Castle

Dettensee was first mentioned in a document in 816 as Tatinse (a man named Perahtlant donated his possessions in villa Tatinse nuncupata to the monastery of St. Gallen). Count Christoph Ladislaus von Nellenburg had the castle built between 1565 and 1591. In 1620, Dettensee came under Hohenzollern-Haigerloch and changed owners several times in the following periods.

The complex, a rectangle of about 50 by 60 m, was surrounded by a moat and a wall. Of the formerly four buildings - castle, tithe barn, vogt's house and long annex - only the vogt's house and the annex still exist, and parts of the surrounding wall are still present.

The actual castle, about 25 by 20 m with a stair tower at the northeast corner, was located on the eastern ring wall. It was demolished as early as 1818, only the castle cellar still exists. The large barn opposite the castle part to the west was once the town hall, bakehouse, cider press and fire station. After several fires, the new town hall stands there today.

On the south side of the wall lies the vogt's house, presumably built in the second half of the 17th century. Connected to it is the elongated annex with an exit gate to the southern castle garden and a prominent round tower at the southeast corner.

The main access to the castle courtyard was near the northeast corner. The round-arched entrance gate is still present. An adjacent part of the complex in the northeast is the parish church of St. Cyriak, whose choir and tower were built around 1500.
