Delitzsch Castle

Delitzsch Castle, one of Saxony's oldest castles, presents itself as an impressive Baroque edifice deeply embedded in the history of the North Saxony region. It is picturesquely situated in the planned old town of Delitzsch and today serves as a vibrant cultural center, attracting visitors with its rich past and diverse uses.
History+
The castle's origins date back to the 9th or 10th century when Slavic Sorbs erected a wooden fort. During the East Colonization, a stone burgward was built on this site. From 1389, Margrave Wilhelm I of Meissen had the complex converted into a fortified moated castle in the Gothic style, of which the castle tower and two deep cellars still bear witness today. The Wettins used the castle from 1387 to 1540 as an administrative and travel residence. Between 1540 and 1558, it was converted into a Renaissance castle for the Saxon Electors. The castle received its current Baroque appearance during the last major renovation phase from 1689 to 1696. Subsequently, it served the Duchy of Saxe-Merseburg as a widow's and travel residence and is now the only surviving monument of this duchy in Saxony.
