Delemont Castle

The castle was built in 1716-21 by Prince-Bishop Jean-Conrad de Reinach.

It served as the summer residence for the Prince-Bishops of Basel until 1793. During the French Revolution, the castle was confiscated and sold to private owners. In 1820, it was acquired by the city of Delémont and has since served as the seat of the cantonal government.

The castle is an impressive example of Baroque architecture. The main building, with its two wings, forms a U-shape and encloses a spacious courtyard. The facade is adorned with elegant pilasters, cornices, and window frames. The interior of the castle is equally magnificent, with richly decorated halls and salons.

Particularly noteworthy are the "Salle des Gardes" (Guard Room) and the "Salon des Évêques" (Bishops' Salon), which still largely retain their original furnishings.

Today, the Castle of Delémont is not only the seat of the cantonal government but also a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore parts of the castle during guided tours and learn more about its fascinating history.

The castle also regularly hosts cultural events, exhibitions, and concerts. The castle park, with its ancient trees and picturesque views, invites visitors to linger and relax.
