Dautenstein Castle
Dautenstein Castle, also known as Tutenstein, Duttenstein or Dutenstein, is a former moated castle near Dautenstein in the area of today's municipality of Seelbach in the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg.
The Staufer-era lowland castle follows the Staufer building scheme already known from Lahr lowland castle, with a rectangular floor plan and four round corner towers, and was presumably built around 1235 by the imperial ministeriales of Dautenstein. The lowland castle was destroyed in the German Peasants' War and expanded in 1594 by Jakob von Geroldseck in the late Renaissance style to become the residence of the Lordship of Hohengeroldseck.
Current Use+
The current building (private property) dates back to a new construction in the second half of the 18th century and occupies only a part of the complex.
Dautenstein is included in the list of monuments of the state of Baden-Württemberg and was declared a "Cultural Heritage of the State" by the Landesverein Badische Heimat in 2005.
