Colmdorf Castle

Colmdorf Castle, also known as Carolinenruhe Castle, is located in the formerly independent district of Colmdorf in Bayreuth.

The village of Colmdorf, then called Kolbendorf, was first mentioned in Landbuch A of the Bayreuth office in 1386. From 1421 onwards, it was simply called Colmdorf. The wooden predecessor of the current castle stood a little further south and was mentioned in documents from the mid-16th century. This wooden castle burned down in 1620. In 1662, Margrave Christian Ernst gifted the castle to his wife Erdmuthe Sophie.

In 1754, the margravial minister Baron von Reitzenstein acquired it and, after its demolition in 1754/55, had it rebuilt in its current form by court building inspector Rudolf Heinrich Richter. Just a few years later, Margrave Friedrich reacquired it and gifted it to his second wife Sophie Caroline Marie von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. It was also named Carolinenruhe after her.

In the following years until 1886, the owners changed frequently. In 1886, the gardener Johann Friedrich Popp bought it. His descendants (community of heirs) still own the castle today.
