Christianenburg Castle

Christiansburg Castle is located in the town of Eisenberg in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia.

South of the old town, on an elevation that slopes more steeply to the south, the castle is located near the fork of Federal Highway 7 with further transport links to the surrounding towns.

A castle has been documented at this site since the 12th century. It was strategically important for the trade routes of the time. It was surrounded by a wall and a moat. The castle was rebuilt several times. In 1589, the new kitchen was built. Of the medieval castle and the Renaissance palace, only the west wing remains today. From 1680–1707, Duke Christian of Saxe-Eisenberg had the building ensemble altered. The castle was transformed into a baroque three-wing complex. From 1679–1692, the transverse church was added on the eastern edge. The castle has two separate parks with an arcaded garden, the laboratory, and the kitchen garden with a pavilion. The Imperial Hall was restored in 1993/1994.
