Český Krumlov Castle

Český Krumlov Castle, also known as Krumau Castle, is an impressive historical structure located in the eponymous town of Český Krumlov in South Bohemia, Czech Republic. It is considered one of Central Europe's most significant cultural monuments and is the second-largest historical complex in the country after Prague Castle.
History+
The castle's origins date back to around 1240, when the Krumau branch of the Witigonen family erected a castle on this site. After the extinction of this line in 1302, ownership passed to the Rosenbergs, who made Krumau their residence for three centuries. Under their patronage, the complex was expanded into the Upper Castle in the 14th century and converted into a three-winged palace in the 15th century. In the 16th century, under William of Rosenberg, the castle underwent extensive Renaissance-style renovations. After being sold to Emperor Rudolf II in 1602 and a brief episode under his son Julius d’Austria, the castle was gifted to the Eggenbergs in 1622. They shaped the complex with Baroque extensions and the creation of the castle garden. From 1719 to 1947, the castle was owned by the Schwarzenbergs, who carried out further Baroque alterations in the 18th century, including the construction of the current castle theater and the expansion of the Cloak Bridge.
