Červený Hrádek Castle

The origins of the castle lie in Bořek Castle, presumably built before 1413 by Dietrich Kraa. After its sale in 1417 to Wenzel von Morawes and Kopitz, a Catholic who fought on the imperial side during the Hussite Wars, the castle was burned down by Hussites in 1421. Following its reconstruction, it was painted red and subsequently referred to as the Red Castle or Red House (Červený Hrádek). In 1448, Albert von Konipas acquired the complex, followed by further changes of ownership until the dominion passed to the Glatz von Altenhof in 1473. In 1516, Anna Glatz, married to Sebastian von Weitmühl, inherited the estate. After a brief Saxon occupation and a pledge to Heinrich von Gersdorff, Christoph von Carlowitz acquired the castle in 1554. In 1577, Bohuslav Felix von Lobkowitz and Hassenstein bought the estate, whose fate was closely linked to Chomutov until 1605. Under Georg Popel von Lobkowicz, a staunch Catholic, an uprising of the Protestant population occurred, during which the castle was plundered. After Popel's downfall, his property was confiscated, and in 1605, Adam Hrzan von Harasov acquired Rothenhaus. During the Thirty Years' War, the castle was besieged, conquered, and plundered multiple times. After its destruction, the current chateau was rebuilt between 1655 and 1675 under Johann Adam von Herzan, with the design likely by Antonio della Porta. Johann Alexander von Rottenhan acquired the dominion in 1771 and later handed it over to his son Heinrich, who enlarged the castle chapel and laid out an English garden. His daughter Marie Gabrielle, Countess von Buquoy, inherited the estate in 1809 and had a district road built in 1832. In 1861, a fire destroyed parts of the castle and surrounding buildings. In 1938, important political meetings between Lord Walter Runciman and Konrad Henlein took place here. After 1945, the German owners were expropriated. Since 1961, Červený Hrádek has been a district of Jirkov, and the castle has been owned by the city since 1995.

Červený Hrádek Castle is located in the municipality of Jirkov-Červený Hrádek in the Ústecký kraj, a region in northwestern Czech Republic. It stands at an elevation of approximately 394 meters above sea level.
