Castell Castle (Tägerwilen)

To be privately owned

Castell Castle in Tägerwilen, Canton Thurgau, is a significant historicist castle complex in Switzerland. It is perched on a hill of the Thurgau Seerücken and is a defining structure of the region.

History+

The origins of the current castle date back to 1585, when the Konstanz Junker Konrad Vogt von Wartenfels had a late Renaissance manor house built in place of a farmhouse. This building still forms the core of the complex today. In 1661, the property passed to the St. Gallen brothers Zollikofer von Altenklingen, who initiated renovations in 1725. In 1790, it came into the possession of Junker Daniel von Scherer from St. Gallen. A notable episode was the accommodation of 506 members of the Bourbaki Army for four weeks in 1871. Between 1878 and 1894, under Baron Max von Scherer-Scherburg, the residence was transformed into a representative Neo-Renaissance castle by architect Emil Otto Tafel. Carl von Häberlin adorned the property with frescoes between 1892 and 1894, depicting scenes from the castle's history. A remarkable interior feature is the replica of a Moorish hall from the Alhambra. Since 1901, the castle has been owned by the von Stockar family through inheritance, who are now in their fourth generation of ownership.
