Buttlar Castle
The Castle's History+
The castle was mentioned in 1170 as a moated castle owned by Hartnid von Butlar. In 1590, the current castle was built. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed by the communists.
Architectural Features+
The castle is a four-winged complex with a rectangular courtyard. The main building has three stories and a hipped roof. The façades are plastered and have simple window frames. A notable feature is the Renaissance portal on the west side.
The Chapel
The castle chapel, dedicated to St. Michael, is located in the east wing. It features a baroque altar and frescoes from the 18th century. The chapel is still used for services today.
Current Use+
Today, the castle houses a museum that showcases the history of the building and the region. It also serves as a venue for cultural events and weddings. Parts of the castle are available for overnight stays.
