Burgwindheim Castle

The castle was built from 1720 to 1725 by the Ebrach Monastery and served as the official residence of the curia and summer residence of the Ebrach abbots.

The plans for the magnificent baroque building came from the renowned architect Balthasar Neumann, who also designed the Würzburg Residence. The castle is a three-winged complex with a central main building and two side wings that enclose a courtyard of honor.

The facade is richly decorated with sculptures, stucco, and frescoes. Inside, the castle impresses with its opulent state rooms, including the Kaisersaal (Emperor's Hall), the Fürstensaal (Princes' Hall), and the Schlosskapelle (Castle Chapel).

The Ebrach Monastery, founded in 1127, was one of the most important Cistercian monasteries in Germany. The abbots of Ebrach were powerful spiritual and secular rulers who significantly shaped the history of Franconia.

The castle served as a representative setting for the abbots to receive guests, hold court, and administer their extensive possessions. It was also a place of retreat and recreation, where the abbots could escape the stresses of monastic life.

In 1803, the Ebrach Monastery was secularized as part of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss. The castle became state property and was subsequently used for various purposes.

For a time, it served as a district court, then as a prison, and later as a hospital. After extensive renovations in the 20th century, the castle is now used as a venue for cultural events, conferences, and seminars.

Today, Ebrach Castle is a vibrant cultural center that attracts visitors from near and far. The magnificent rooms provide a unique setting for concerts, exhibitions, and theater performances.

The castle also houses a museum that provides insights into the history of the monastery and the castle. Visitors can explore the state rooms, admire the art treasures, and learn about the lives of the Ebrach abbots.
