Burgberg Castle

Burgberg Castle is located on a promontory in the Hürbe Valley in the village of Burgberg, which belongs to Giengen an der Brenz in the district of Heidenheim. It consists of two four-story buildings with gabled roofs, standing parallel to each other and separated by a narrow courtyard. The castle contains remnants of a former fortress, whose original encircling wall defines the outline of the complex as an irregular quadrangle.

Burgberg is a former castle of the lower noble family of the Knights of Berg, first mentioned in a document in 1425 as Burgbergk. The knightly family served the Margraves of Burgau and, at times, the Counts of Helfenstein. Around 1630, the complex was severely devastated. In 1664, the new owner, Count Joachim Gottfried von Grafeneck, had the castle rebuilt, before it passed to the Princes of Oettingen-Wallerstein in 1728. In 1838, Baron Edmund von Linden bought it and had it renovated and expanded. Maria von Linden, who was the first woman to receive the title of professor, was born at Burgberg Castle on July 18, 1869. Countess Maria von Linden, granddaughter of Edmund von Linden, was forced to sell the estate and castle in 1936 due to high legal costs and severance payments to relatives. Since 1963, the Badmann family has been the owner.
