Burg Castle

The castle complex is located on the eastern spur of the Schönenberg rock ridge above the village of Burg, and its extensive building complex dominates the village.

There is uncertainty about the origins of the castle. The oldest parts of the complex date back to the middle of the 13th century, and it is assumed that the mention of a Biederthal Castle in the 12th century refers to the Alt-Biederthal ruin on the same rock ridge. As a Habsburg possession, the castle passed to a branch of the House of Ratolsdorf, which owned property in the rear Blauengebiet. Under the Lords of Biederthal from the House of Ratolsdorf, Biederthal Castle, today's Schloss, was built in 1250. In 1269, the Bishop of Basel acquired the castle and first enfeoffed it to the Lords of Biederthal until 1392, after which the Lords of Wessenberg were enfeoffed with the fortress. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, the Wessenbergs transformed the medieval castle into a modern Schloss.

The Schloss was sold to private owners in 1810 and remains in private ownership today, not publicly accessible.
