Buldern Castle

Buldern Castle is a manor house in the Dülmen district of Buldern in Münsterland, which is now used as a boarding school and private grammar school.

While the medieval seat of the von Buldern family was in the core of the village of Buldern, a new seat was built outside the village, the current Buldern Castle, at the latest in the 16th century. After several changes of ownership, it passed to the von Romberg family in the 18th century.

In the 1950s, the manor house housed the Research Centre for Comparative Behavioural Research of the then Max Planck Institute for Marine Biology, where Konrad Lorenz conducted ethological studies, primarily on geese, until 1961.

Buldern Castle is now used as a boarding school and private grammar school. As the capacity of the castle building was not sufficient, several additional buildings were erected over the years to accommodate up to 300 boarding students. Currently, only a small part of the male students are housed in the original castle, while the female students are housed in the so-called "New House" on the new campus of the castle park. This campus also includes the school, a sports field, and a student dormitory.
