Budatín Castle

The origins of Budatín Castle date back to the second half of the 13th century, when it was built as a royal castle near the confluence of the Kysuca and Váh rivers to collect tolls. In the early 14th century, the fortress came into the possession of Matthew Csák, who reinforced the Gothic watchtowers and had new residential and economic buildings erected within the walls. From 1487, the castle belonged to the Szunyogh family, who owned it until the end of the 18th century. Between 1545 and the early 17th century, the complex was rebuilt in Renaissance style, and its fortifications were strengthened due to the Turkish threat and local uprisings. In the 17th century, during the Baroque period, a chapel and other buildings were added, and a park was laid out, transforming the estate into a Baroque moated castle by 1715. After the extinction of the Szunyogh family, the Csákys took over the castle until 1945. During the Revolution of 1848/49, the castle suffered severe damage from imperial troops, with its furnishings and library being destroyed. By 1870, most of the damage was repaired in a Neoclassical style with Romanesque influences, and the complex subsequently served as barracks. The construction of the Košice-Oderberg Railway in 1872 reduced the size of the park. A final major renovation took place from 1922 to 1923. After 1945, the castle was nationalized and now houses exhibitions of the Považie Museum.

Budatín Castle is located in Žilina (Sillein) in the Žilinský kraj, a region in Central Slovakia, at an elevation of approximately 320 m above sea level.

Today, Budatín Castle serves as a museum and is accessible to visitors, who can explore three exhibitions of the Považie Museum there.
