Buchberg Castle

In the 12th century, a ministerial family of the Babenbergs resided here. The first of their representatives mentioned was Heinrich von Puochperge in 1160. He was likely related to the Kuenringers and is also considered the builder of the castle.

When the Buchbergers died out in the first quarter of the 13th century, Albero von Valchenberg took over the property. His descendants, who also named themselves after Buchberg, resided in the fortress until 1324. In 1339, the Lords of Winkel arrived, and from 1356, the Lords of Stockern. Half of the originally allodial castle had meanwhile become princely and was granted as a fief. The dominion was probably not particularly profitable, as debts soon accumulated and owners changed relatively quickly.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, these were the families Matseber, Teufel, Kuefstein, and Schiffer. In 1645, Buchberg was occupied by the Swedes. Further owners included the families Polheim, Auersperg, Hackelberg, Collalto, Rottal, Rummel, and Stack. In 1823, Karl Prince von Croy bought the castle. His descendants inhabited it until after the Second World War.

At the beginning of the 1960s, Buchberg stood empty and fell into disrepair. The current owner is a private foundation of the Bogner family, who acquired the castle from the bankruptcy estate in 1965 and has been successively restoring it.
