Brunnwald Castle

Brunnwald Castle is located in the village of Brunnwald, municipality of Vorderweißenbach in the district of Urfahr-Umgebung near Bad Leonfelden (Brunnwald 5).
The castle in the forest area of Brunnwald was built between 1724 and 1727 in the middle of the Brunnwald forest as a Starhemberg hunting lodge. A fire in 1898 largely destroyed it. In 1905, the castle was rebuilt. The four-story tower protruding from the masonry dates from the reconstruction.
In 1939, the castle was confiscated by the National Socialists and used as an NSV mother and child home. After the Second World War, services were held in the castle for the Protestants in the Bad Leonfelden area who had arrived due to the large refugee movements. These were later moved to the market's secondary school. A maternity ward of the Diakoniewerk was also housed in the castle. In 1955, a Red Cross convalescent home was quartered there, then the building stood empty for some time. From 1965 to 1982, it was leased to a Spanish association for guests and as a children's home.
Since 1993, the building has served as a guesthouse and residence. The hotel and restaurant business is run by Helga and Gilbert Holzer. The castle is still owned by the Starhemberg Forest and Estate Directorate today.
