Brunn Castle

In the 12th century, a ministerial family of the Kuenringer, who appeared in documents several times since 1114, resided here. In 1172, Brunn is first mentioned in the Zwettl Chronicle among the castles of the Waldviertel. In 1258, a Dietlo de prunne is reported.

Around 1300, the Lichtenegger family were the lords of Brunn, but it passed to the Neidegger family as early as 1337. In 1520, the Neidegger's property was divided within the family. Brunn went to Wolfgang von Neidegg. His son sold the fortress to his brother-in-law Ludwig Kirchberger. Through marriage, it came to Johann Hartmann von Trauttmansdorff in 1581. Three years later, he had a habitable moated castle built on the site of the old castle.

In 1662, Ferdinand Ernst Graf Herberstein acquired the lordships of Lichtenau, Allentsgschwendt, and Brunn and united them into a fideicommissum. Brunn became the residence and administrative center of the Herberstein property in Lower Austria. In 1792, Josef Johann Nepomuk Graf Herberstein sold the three lordships to Johann Graf Stiebar, who was succeeded in 1803 by Anton Edler von Meidl. Josef Michael von Ehrenfels took over the property in 1812. He carried out extensive renovations and partial re-furnishing of the interior in Neo-Baroque style.

During the Second World War, Bernhard Freiherr von Ehrenfels sold Brunn Castle to Hermann Ehrhardt. He died in 1971. His widow, Margarethe Prinzessin Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst, sold Brunn in 1976 to Dr. Helmut Mitterbach. From 1986, Klaus Peter Blümel attempted to set up and rent out apartments in the castle. The current owner is Dr. Erhard Schwanzer, who is having the castle renovated.
