Brüninghausen Castle
Brüninghausen Castle is located in Plettenberg (district of Ohle) in the Märkischer Kreis in Sauerland, North Rhine-Westphalia.
The exact date of construction is not known, it was first mentioned in 1311 as a fief of the Archbishop of Cologne "bona Brunnenchusen". Today, Brüninghausen Castle, which has a striking appearance with its two connected castle houses, is a residential building. Formerly it was a tower estate and a mill estate and until the beginning of the 19th century it was surrounded by a kind of moat, as the house stood in a pond. This was then drained.
It is the ancestral home of the Brüninghausen family. Today it is owned by the noble family von Wrede, and is inhabited by Christoph Freiherr von Wrede. Traditionally, a Christmas tree sale takes place at Brüninghausen Castle.
