Brandis Castle

The origins of Brandis Castle date back to the 13th century, when it was likely built by the Lords of Aspermont on their own estate. Heinrich von Aspermont bequeathed the castle to his brother Egilolf in 1282, who took possession in 1284. In 1295, the castle served as a neutral location for a treaty between the Bishop of Chur and the Barons of Vaz. After a period in the possession of the Lords of Windegg, the complex passed to Count Friedrich von Toggenburg in 1355, who significantly expanded and fortified it. Under Friedrich VII von Toggenburg, the “New Castle” was built at the beginning of the 15th century. After the Toggenburg line died out, the castle fell to the families of Brandis and Aarburg through marriage in 1437. The Lords of Brandis allied with the League of Ten Jurisdictions in 1477. During the Swabian War in 1499, the lordship of Maienfeld was affected, and the Brandis were captured. After the war, the Brandis sold the castle to the Three Leagues in 1509, who established a bailiwick there. In 1624, the castle was set on fire by retreating Austrian troops and later hastily repaired. A city fire in 1720 damaged it again, and in 1799, French troops burned much of the wood. In 1807, the municipality of Maienfeld acquired the dilapidated complex, which passed into private ownership in 1837. After further sales, the castle was acquired by the Zindel master builder family in 1968, extensively restored, and archaeologically investigated.

Brandis Castle is located in Maienfeld in the Landquart district in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland, at an altitude of approx. 510 m above sea level.

Today, Brandis Castle houses a restaurant. The complex has been extensively restored and is accessible to visitors.
