Bran Castle

The locality of Törzburg was first documented in 1357. In 1377, the Hungarian King Louis the Great granted the inhabitants of Brașov permission to build a border and customs castle on Dietrichstein, which bore the name of the place. Until 1427, Törzburg was under Hungarian rule and experienced its first siege by the Turks in 1436. In 1498, the castle came into the possession of Brașov and successfully resisted a siege by Wallachian troops in 1529. In 1593, spontaneously ignited gunpowder destroyed the powder tower. After further sieges and conquests in the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle lost its significance in the 19th century. Following the incorporation of Transylvania into Romania, Brașov gifted the castle to Queen Marie in 1920, whose daughter Princess Ileana later inherited it. After World War II, the castle was taken over by the communist state and developed into a tourist attraction under Nicolae Ceausescu. In 2006, it was returned to Dominic Habsburg and his sisters. Since 2009, it has been operated as a museum by the new owners.

Bran Castle is located in the village of Bran (Törzburg) in Brașov County, Centru region, Romania. It stands at an elevation of approximately 754 meters above sea level.

Visitors can explore Bran Castle today. It serves as a museum, displaying objects and furniture from the Habsburg family's possession, including royal insignia such as a crown and a scepter. A luxury apartment is also available for overnight stays in the castle tower.
