Schloss Bothmer: A Journey Through Time+
From Medieval Origins to Baroque Splendor+

Schloss Bothmer traces its origins back to an old knight's estate, first mentioned in 1181.

Over the centuries, the estate changed hands multiple times, belonging to various noble families. In the 17th century, it came into the possession of the Bothmer family, who would leave a lasting mark on its history.

The current baroque palace was built between 1726 and 1732 by Hans Caspar von Bothmer, an influential statesman and diplomat in the service of the British Crown. He commissioned the renowned architect Johann Friedrich Künnecke to design a magnificent residence that would reflect his wealth and status.

Architectural Features and Interior Design+

Schloss Bothmer is an outstanding example of North German Baroque architecture. The three-winged complex, with its central main building and two side wings, encloses a spacious courtyard.

The facade is characterized by its clear lines, symmetrical arrangement, and decorative elements such as pilasters, cornices, and sculptures. The impressive main portal, adorned with the Bothmer family crest, leads into the palace's interior.

Inside, visitors can admire a wealth of richly decorated rooms, including the grand ballroom, the dining hall, and various salons. The interiors feature stucco work, ceiling paintings, valuable tapestries, and antique furniture, providing a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the 18th-century aristocracy.

The Palace Park: A Green Oasis+

Surrounding Schloss Bothmer is a vast and picturesque park, designed in the English landscape style. The park, with its sprawling lawns, ancient trees, winding paths, and charming water features, invites visitors to take leisurely strolls and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

A particular highlight of the park is the orangery, a beautiful glasshouse that once housed exotic plants and now serves as a venue for cultural events.

Schloss Bothmer Today: Museum and Cultural Center+

After a comprehensive restoration, Schloss Bothmer opened its doors to the public as a museum in 2019. Visitors can explore the historic rooms, learn about the palace's history and its former inhabitants, and admire the extensive art collection.

In addition to its role as a museum, Schloss Bothmer also serves as a vibrant cultural center, hosting concerts, exhibitions, lectures, and other events throughout the year. It has become a popular destination for tourists and locals alike, offering a unique blend of history, art, and culture.
