Bornheim Castle

Schloss Bornheim+
Geschichte+
Between 1728 and 1732, Schloss Bornheim was built in the style of a Maison de Plaisance (pleasure palace), presumably according to the plans of Johann Conrad Schlaun, a Baroque master builder. Of the previous buildings, only the outer bailey remained; nothing was left of the former gate tower with drawbridge. As a replacement, a Baroque entrance arch was built, with a stone bridge and a small bell tower.
Further remains of the outer bailey, such as the small bell tower, fell victim to a major fire on February 4, 1972.
Owners+
The lords of the castle changed several times in the 19th century. Purchasers were Gerhard Freiherr von Carnap in 1826, Wenzel Graf von Boos-Waldeck in 1859, and Heinrich Freiherr von Diergardt in 1872.
Today, Schloss Bornheim is owned by the Barons von Diergardt, who operate it as a social institution.
