The noble family of Birkig was based in Birkig. They owned a castle estate in Neustadt, as they had to perform service at the castle. At the beginning of the 18th century, the indebted family sold their manor in Birkig, and in 1758, with the death of Katharina von Birkig, the family name finally died out.
Georg Paul von Hendrich zu Ahorn had bought the overgrown property with a dilapidated house on it, had a new building erected (which still exists today and is a listed building), and sold the whole property in 1745 to Wilhelm Ernst von Speßhardt zu Mupperg. The estate remained in the possession of this family until its dissolution in 1881 – the end of the Birkig castle lordship.
The current small castle was built in the 18th century.
