Birkholz Castle

The property, referred to as a manor (Rittergut) in 1895 and formerly belonging to the Lenzen district, was acquired in 1904 by Cavalry Captain Karl Gustav August von Maltzahn. He had the castle, manor house, and park newly built and laid out. The castle was built in 1905 in the Neo-Baroque style and stands at the end of a generously designed castle park. The design of the house reflects the representative aspirations of the builder. Particularly noteworthy are the still partially preserved original oak floors and the intact stucco work. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

In the post-war years, the castle served as a refugee camp. During GDR times, it was used by civil defense. Afterwards, a residence of the CJD (Christliches Jugenddorf) was housed here. Today, the castle is owned by a GbR, in which Mr. Viktor von Podbielski (great-grandson of the well-known state minister Victor von Podbielski and owner of the Dallmin estate - 1844 to 1916) and Prof. Dr. Gisbert Richard each hold a 50% share.
