Bieberstein Castle

Bieberstein Castle is located on the Bobritzsch, a tributary of the Freiberger Mulde in the Reinsberg district of Bieberstein, Central Saxony, Saxony.

The first documented mention of a nobleman named after the castle dates back to 1218. From the castle, which is still remembered by the medieval square tower, a modern castle developed. In the 14th century, the castle was owned by the Lords of Maltitz and later by the Lords of Bieberstein. The new castle was combined with the medieval keep around 1600 to form a closed building group. Gotthelf Friedrich von Schönberg (1631–1708) had most of the building, except for the foundations, demolished in 1666 and rebuilt in its current basic form. Between 1710 and 1720, the grand staircase on the west side and the four-flight staircase were built. In 1945, the owners were dispossessed and expelled by the communists.

Until 1992, Bieberstein Castle was a youth hostel and is now owned by Maritta Rogalla von Bieberstein Koch-Weser, the wife of Caio Koch-Weser, and is used as a conference center. Its castle park with old trees is not publicly accessible.

In the adjacent chapel hangs the coat of arms (stag beetle) of the von Schroeter family, who inhabited this castle since the beginning of the 19th century.
