Beuggen Castle

The origins of Beuggen Castle date back to 1246, when Ulrich von Liebenberg donated his possessions, including a farm, a church, and a castle, to the Teutonic Order. The donation occurred after a knight named Mangold von Beuggen had sold the original Buckein Castle due to high debts. In 1268, the castle was completed by the Teutonic Order. For over 560 years, it served as the main seat of the Bailiwick of Swabia-Alsace-Burgundy. In the 15th century, the main seat of the bailiwick shifted to Altshausen, as Beuggen was geographically more exposed and Altshausen possessed high jurisdiction. In May 1525, the castle was plundered during the Peasants' War. Subsequently, Georg von Andlau had the fortifications strengthened. Between 1585 and 1598, the New Castle was built. During the Thirty Years' War, the complex was repeatedly contested. From 1752 to 1757, extensive Baroque renovations were carried out by the order's master builder Johann Caspar Bagnato, doubling the castle's size. After the expropriation of the Teutonic Order in 1806, the castle served as a military hospital during the Napoleonic Wars from 1813 to 1815. Between 1820 and 1980, it was used as an orphanage. A theory that Kaspar Hauser lived here around 1815/16 is denied by historical scholarship.

Beuggen Castle is located in Rheinfelden in the Lörrach district of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, at an elevation of approx. 281 m above sea level.

Today, Beuggen Castle houses a conference and meeting center of the Evangelical Church in Baden. Visitors can explore the historic complex, whose Baroque extensions and former castle garden are still recognizable.
