Bettwiesen Castle

Bettwiesen Castle, a historic structure in the canton of Thurgau, Switzerland, stands on an elevated position, offering expansive views over the landscape. Originally built as a summer residence for abbots, it bears witness to a vibrant history and is today a prominent landmark in the region.
History+
On the site of the current castle once stood the fortress of the Barons of Bettwiesen, which passed into the possession of Fischingen Abbey in 1471. As the old castle fell into disrepair, its stones were used in 1643 for the construction of the Bettwiesen church. As early as 1627, Abbot Placidus Brunschweiler of Fischingen had a new, described as “cheerful,” small castle built opposite the former fortress. Key reasons for this construction included the attractive views and the healthy mountain air, which was considered beneficial during times of plague. Political considerations also played a role: the abbot not only secured the vineyards belonging to the abbey but also created an important base for monitoring the surrounding feudal estates. Until 1848, the castle served as a summer residence for the abbots and monks of Fischingen, before it passed to the state after the dissolution of the Thurgau monasteries and later into private ownership.
