Bertoldsheim Castle

Bertoldsheim Castle is a baroque two-story, three-wing complex with a three-story hip roof. It stands on the edge of a rocky, protruding hill, a southern spur of the Swabian-Franconian Jura, in the Bertoldsheim district of the market town of Rennertshofen in the district of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen.

Where the castle stands today, there was a thick, square ashlar tower until the end of the 16th century, to which a castle was then added. The owners were the Counts of Graisbach.

After several changes of ownership, in the first years of the 18th century, Baron Franz Fortunat von Ysselbach, who was among other things a Palatine general, governor of Mannheim, and Spanish general field marshal, bought Bertoldsheim. He had a representative baroque castle with 25 Tagewerk (a historical unit of land area) of parkland built there between 1714 and 1730. He commissioned the Swiss Prince-Bishop of Eichstätt's court architect Gabriel de Gabrieli as construction manager.

In 1790, the manorial and knightly fief passed to the Barons von Hornstein. Baron Adam Bernhard von Hornstein-Göffingen had some interior rooms beautified, redesigned the park, and had a lime tree avenue planted, which is still partially preserved or has been reforested. In 1880, Count von Eckart bought the Hofmark Bertoldsheim, which eventually passed to his son-in-law. In 1856, the entire area came into the possession of Count Karl Marcell Du Moulin-Eckart.

In 1945/46, American soldiers had looted art treasures.

The family of Karl Leon Du Moulin-Eckart owned the castle until 2008. Eva Countess Du Moulin-Eckart (née Kusche), as the owner of the castle, sold movable art treasures such as baroque commodes, oil paintings, books, busts, engravings, and desk secretaries through the auction house Sotheby's in 2005.

A doctor and art collector couple acquired the baroque building with its surrounding park and outbuildings in 2008, and intends to house their private ethnological museum there. Currently, the exterior grounds are being renovated.
