An Eberhard von Klaffenberg (Glapfenberg near Grafenwinn) zu Bernhardswald is first mentioned in 1362. A castle is also mentioned. In 1632, Bernhardswald and the castle were plundered and damaged during the Thirty Years' War. In 1689, ownership passed to Franz Josef von Stingelheim, who rebuilt the castle. During the War of the Spanish Succession in 1702 and the march-through of the French army in 1742, the castle was partially destroyed and rebuilt. In 1885, the castle was destroyed again and rebuilt in the same year.
