Beringen Castle

The castle's origins date back to the year 1000, when the Counts of Tengen, then lords of Beringen, had an impressive 25-meter-high tower with a moat built for their vogt. This tower later became the ancestral seat of the noble Hünen von Beringen, who eventually took possession of it. In the 12th century, the Hünen von Beringen left their ancestral castle to settle in Schaffhausen, where as respected citizens they held the office of Schultheiss several times. The family died out in 1413. Already in 1394, the tower was given to a farmer and lost its function as a noble residence. Around 1450, after a fire, a reconstruction took place, during which the palas was built. Later additions included a tithe barn in 1624, and around 1800, a vaulted cellar with a draw-well and a wine press. In the 20th century, the complex faced decay, but in 1984, the private "Stiftung Schloss" acquired the property and opened the local museum there in 1989.

Beringen Castle is located at an altitude of approximately 459 meters above sea level in the center of Beringen, in the canton of Schaffhausen, Switzerland.

Today, Beringen Castle serves as a local museum and is publicly accessible. Visitors can explore the various areas of the historic building complex and learn more about local history.
