Bergedorf Castle is the only preserved castle within the urban area of Hamburg. It is situated directly in the historic center of Bergedorf, nestled by the Bille river, and bears witness to a long and eventful history as a center of rule and administration.

History+

The exact origins of the complex are not fully clarified, but a “fortified house” was already mentioned in documents in the 14th century. It is believed that an early defensive structure existed as early as 1208, when the Bille river was dammed. Until 1420, it served as a temporary residence for the Dukes of Saxe-Lauenburg. Subsequently, the Hanseatic cities of Lübeck and Hamburg took over the rule of the Bergedorf district, and the castle became the seat of a joint administration. This dual rule ended in 1868 when Hamburg acquired Lübeck's share. The building then housed various municipal institutions such as the court and police, before becoming the Museum for Bergedorf and the Vierlande in 1953.
