Belvedere Castle
Belvedere Palace in Vienna is an impressive Baroque palace complex built for Prince Eugene of Savoy. It is famous for its architecture, extensive gardens, and today houses significant art collections. Its historical importance is underscored by the signing of the Austrian State Treaty in 1955.
History+
The complex, designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, was commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy starting in 1714. The Lower Belvedere was completed first, originally serving as a garden palace with an orangery and stables. The Marble Hall was intended for representative receptions. Later, the Upper Belvedere was added as the prince's summer residence, although he continued to live in the Lower Belvedere. The gardens, the oldest parts of the complex, were laid out around 1700 and have been open to the public since 1780. A special feature is the thematic design of the sculptures, symbolizing the ascent from the underworld to Olympus. In 1955, the Austrian State Treaty was signed in the Upper Belvedere, giving the palace special national significance.
