Bellwitz Castle

In 1312, the manor was first mentioned as being owned by Lodewicus de Bellenwicz. In 1348, the property was owned by a Hannus von Belewicz and is referred to as a manor. In 1572, the existing manor was elevated to a knight's estate (Rittergut). In 1730, ownership transferred to the Lords of Gersdorf. The castle originated as the manor house of the knight's estate and its basic structure dates back to around 1743. At the entrance gate are the coats of arms of the former castle owners von Heldreich and the von Braun family, from which the wife of the knight's estate owner Johann Georg Adolf von Heldreich originated. On the north side, the originally Baroque building has an archway from 1791 with the coats of arms of the noble families von Hartitsch, von Gersdorff, and von Klix. The building was rebuilt in 1859/60 in the style of the German Neo-Renaissance and, in this context, received its Renaissance gables and a now-missing roof turret with a clockwork. Several outbuildings and a small park were created at the castle. In 1945, the owners (von Heldreich family) were forcibly dispossessed and expelled by the communists. After 1945, Bellwitz Castle served as a residential building, grocery store, kindergarten, and cultural center for the village. Today it stands empty and in need of renovation.
