Bedheim Castle

The origin of the castle lies in an old fortress, which was mentioned in 1169 as being in the possession of the Lords of Kern. Ownership changed in 1439 to the Lords of Hessberg, in 1772 to Prince Joseph of Saxony-Hildburghausen, and in 1778 to Conrad Friedlieb Rühle von Lilienstern. In 1945, the Rühle von Lilienstern family was dispossessed and expelled by the communists. After the Wende in 1990, the descendants of the Rühle von Lilienstern family were able to reacquire the castle.

The three-winged castle emerged from a moated house with a neck ditch, which was built in connection with the church designed as a fortified church. During the German Peasants' War, the castle was destroyed and subsequently rebuilt. In 1588, it was converted into a Renaissance castle. Its current appearance dates back to the alterations made for Prince Joseph of Saxony-Hildburghausen's summer residence.
