Badinghagen Castle (Meinerzhagen)

Badinghagen Castle is a moated castle located close to the border of the Bergisches Land, south of Meinerzhagen, and was extensively modernized in 1902. Its moats are fed by the Agger river. The castle is privately used and not open to visitors.

The castle was first mentioned in the Werden Provostry Register in 1160 as a feudal estate. It has been demonstrably owned by the Badinghagen family since 1363. After the family died out, it passed in 1509 through Friedrich von Karthausen, by sale in 1642, to Friedrich von Neuhoff. Three generations later, Conrad Caspar von Nagel, a son of the heiress, became the owner of Badinghagen Castle.

The current complex, which has been rebuilt several times, only roughly retains the footprint of the earlier structure, which was built around the mid-17th century by the married couple Engelbert von Neuhoff and Anna Margarethe von Scheid. Above the massive ground floor plinth rises a half-timbered upper floor with shingle cladding. The Dresler family from Kreuztal owns Badinghagen.
