Bachtobel Castle (Weinfelden)

The castle was built in the Middle Ages on the site of a castle belonging to the Barons of Oberboltshausen. The two wine presses from 1584 and 1729 bear witness to an old winemaking tradition. In 1784, Johann Ulrich Kesselring bought the castle and thus the dominion of Oberboltshausen or Bachtobel from the Junkers Ebinger. For 33,000 guilders, he acquired fields, pastures, and not least the vineyards, which to this day are the capital of the Bachtobel castle estate. His second wife, whom he had met during his cure as a Helvetian senator in Gurnigel Bad, had the house renovated in the Directoire style, according to the fashion of the time. His son, District Administrator Johann Ulrich the Younger, read out the Thurgau declaration of independence from the Weinfelden grape staircase in 1798.
