Asch Castle
Asch Castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Asch, first documented in sources around the year 1000. The castle is located west of Moosburg an der Isar (Upper Bavaria) at the foot of the old town below the Westerberg.
In the 12th century, the Lords of Asch gave up their manor to increase their influence and prestige at the ducal court in Landshut. In 1541, Wolf von Asch, princely councilor and master of the hunt in Landshut, bought the property back. He had the massive three-story building, still existing today, erected and the castle surrounded by a moat.
In the 17th century, the northern and southern facades were supplemented with curved gables in the Renaissance style, which are no longer present. After the city fire in 1865, the moat was filled with rubble. The gate tower erected in front of the moat has also disappeared today.
The Lords of Asch inhabited the castle until the extinction of the line in 1883.
