Årsta Castle

Årsta Castle (Årsta slott) is a castle in the municipality of Haninge near Stockholm. Årsta became the seat of the Swedish commandery of the Teutonic Order from Livonia in the 13th century. In 1467, it passed into the possession of Erik Axelsson Tott. The castle was rebuilt around 1660 for Admiral Bjelkenstjerna, with Erik Dahlberg possibly involved as architect. In the early 19th century, it was acquired by Carl Fredrik Bremer, whose daughter, the writer Fredrika Bremer, lived here and in Stockholm. When Fredrika Bremer died in the house in 1865, it had already belonged since 1853 to the Swedish industrialist Lars Johan Hierta, who had founded the newspaper Aftonbladet. The castle changed hands several more times and in 1966 became the property of the municipality of Österhaninge (today municipality of Haninge).
