Arbon Castle, an imposing historical complex, stands on the remains of a Roman fort in the picturesque Swiss municipality of Arbon. Its strategic location on Lake Constance and its long history, ranging from Roman origins to its current use as a cultural center, make it a remarkable testament to past eras.

History+

The roots of Arbon Castle stretch back to Roman times, when the fort of Arbor Felix stood on this site. This fort served the inhabitants as protection for centuries and was continuously expanded. Around 1200, the Lords of Arbon, who were subordinate to the Diocese of Constance, erected a castle on the same site to serve as their administrative seat. In the mid-13th century, the fortress passed to the Nobles of Kemnat, under whose rule Arbon received town rights. Rudolf von Habsburg-Laufenburg reacquired the lordship for the Diocese of Constance in 1282. Financial difficulties led to its pawning to the Paygrer of Hagenwil in 1382. After a dispute between the citizens of Arbon and the Paygrer, in which Constance came to the aid of the Arboners, the diocese was able to redeem the pledge and leased it to the Mötteli von Ravensburg family before finally regaining it in 1441. In 1460, the Swiss Confederates took over sovereignty of Thurgau and occupied the castle in 1499 during the Swabian War. Between 1515 and 1520, Bishop Hugo von Hohenlandenberg had the medieval castle demolished and the present castle complex built, with the old tower being preserved.
