Anras Castle
The Pfleggerichtshaus Schloss Anras is a former administrative building and summer residence of the Bishops of Brixen in the mountain village of Anras and one of the most significant secular architectural monuments in East Tyrol.
The village is located in the Lienz district in the High Puster Valley between Lienz and Sillian on a sun terrace, nestled between the Lienz Dolomites to the south and the Villgraten Mountains to the north.
Anras owes its nickname "Granary of East Tyrol" to its exceptionally mild climate. The Bishops of Brixen already appreciated this since the 12th century and had this castle built as a episcopal summer retreat. From 1200 to 1803, Anras was the summer residence of the Bishops of Brixen. In 1236, Emperor Frederick II additionally granted the Diocese of Brixen secular power over the territory of the Lordship of Anras. The Prince-Bishopric of Brixen enjoyed general immunity. In Anras, estate administration could develop alongside jurisdiction.
Over time, the estate of Anras expanded to Obertilliach and to the Lienz Gorge. In 1754, the castle was extended in Baroque style. The cultural jewel was bought and restored by the Messerschmitt Foundation in 1991. Valuable paneling, the courtrooms from 1755, the granary, and all other rooms can be visited again today. The granary serves as a restaurant and natural goods store. The Pfleggerichtshaus Schloss Anras is today an object of identification for the entire region of East and South Tyrol and a model of modern monument preservation.
Museum+
Since 1997, Schloss Anras has also been used as a museum. It houses, among other things, a permanent exhibition by Paul Flora and a history-related court museum. In addition, seasonal focuses are set through special exhibitions and events. Today, the castle is one of the largest museums in East Tyrol and is known nationwide as the "House of Art."
