Annahof Castle
The Niederwürzbacher Palaces are a Baroque ensemble in Niederwürzbacher (Blieskastel, Saarpfalz-Kreis, Saarland) consisting of the palaces Annahof, Monplaisir, and Philippsburg, the latter on Mandelbachtal territory. The palaces are grouped around the Würzbacher Weiher (pond).
In the last quarter of the 18th century, the Counts of der Leyen had a total of five small palaces or country houses built near their residence in Blieskastel, within an extensive park around the Niederwürzbacher Weiher. The originator of this plan is currently unknown, but court architect Peter Rehais is documented in various accounts. The complex was destroyed in the French Revolution in 1792. The estate "Bon voisin" (1786-89), the pleasure palace "Monplaisir" and the Annahof survived the wars, while the pleasure palace "Bagatelle" (1786-92) along with the large Philippsburg Palace were lost.
Annahof+
The Annahof, also known as "Runder Bau" (Round Building), was built around 1788 for Countess Marianne von der Leyen as an agricultural estate. A two-story, five-axis residential building with a hip roof is adjoined by semicircular farm wings, creating an oval courtyard enclosure. Two square, solid, low towers with tent roofs flank the courtyard entrance. The towers on the north side date from an expansion phase around 1920. The building served as a place for excursions and was not designed for longer stays. Swiss cows were kept in the side wings. The impressive effect of the complex becomes particularly clear when one considers the planned landscape and garden design in which these buildings were integrated. For example, an artificial ruin "the Antiquity" was erected near the Annahof. In addition, a "Chinese tower" and a "Turkish tent" were located nearby, among other things. The execution was in the hands of the Leyen court gardener Simon Glattfelder.
