Angenstein Castle

The origins of Angenstein Castle date back to the mid-13th century, though the exact builders are unknown. By 1271, the Bishop of Basel owned half of the estates and enfeoffed the Counts of Thierstein with them. In the 14th century, the fortress was granted by Habsburg-Laufenburg and the Bishop of Basel to the Counts of Thierstein and later to the Münch of Landskron. After the Basel earthquake of 1356, the castle was immediately restored. Following the extinction of the Münch of Landskron in 1460 and a fire in 1494, the complex was repaired multiple times. Another fire in 1517 claimed the life of the then-owner. After a dispute between Solothurn and the Bishop of Basel over the ruins, the Bishop was able to claim the site in 1522, albeit with the condition that it not be rebuilt as a fortress. Around 1560, Chancellor Dr. Wendelin Zipper began reconstruction, leaving the keep empty and instead erecting half-timbered buildings, transforming the castle into a palace. The Zipper family owned the castle until 1751, interrupted by an occupation by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War. After 1751, it passed to related families and remained undamaged as private property during the revolutionary turmoil. Since 1951, Angenstein Castle has been owned by the Canton of Basel-Stadt. After a fire in 1984, it was restored by 1991.

Angenstein Castle is located in Duggingen in the Laufen district, Canton of Basel-Landschaft, Switzerland, at an elevation of approximately 323 m above sea level.

Today, Angenstein Castle houses a restaurant and is thus publicly accessible. The apartments within the castle are inhabited, which restricts access, but the complex can be viewed well from the outside.
